About FocUS Music
FocUS Music is a series of workshops and performances that transform American music into a lens that explores the narrative of American Society. The music of the United States provides ample opportunity to understand the United States while also providing space to understand one's self and community. Participants engage the history of the United States with a critical eye, experiencing the power of music to convey this message.
Founded and led teaching artist and performer AMI YARES, Focus Music began in 2012 with a grant from the Office of Public Affairs, US Embassy Tel Aviv. Since FocUS Music's inception, well-over 100 workshops and concerts have been conducted all over the world.
Each and every workshop identifies formative social and political events, amplifying them through popular folk music.
Current Workshops (custom programmimg also available)
Civil Rights • Civil War • Women's Rights • Freedom Literature • Poverty & Class • Social Change • Songwriting
The performances and workshops are geared toward high school and college students as well as surrounding communities. While achieving competence in American social studies, participants also develop a greater sense of critical thinking, creativity, the English language and more.
